Judy Drysdale
PROFILE
Judy creates three-dimensional, lacy structures using a technique she has developed which uses machining with black thread and monofilament over a wire frame. The inspiration for the structures comes from historical costume.
From an early age Judy enjoyed working with textiles. She gained City and Guilds’ qualifications in Fashion in 1992 and began teaching in Adult Education. During the 10 years she was teaching Judy’s interest in lacemaking grew. While researching historical crinolines for her Diploma in Higher Education in Stitched Textiles, Judy developed a fascination for line structures, which draws on her knowledge of traditional lacemaking techniques.
Judy’s current work explores the symbiotic relationship between the lacemaker and the lady who wore the lace. One restricted by routine and the need to work while the other wore the lace and enjoyed a life of luxury. Both were constrained within their social spheres.
Judy is continuing to look at the stories and events contrasting the lives of the lace wearers and the makers and is developing her work by experimenting with various threads, wires and inclusions to illustrate these narratives.
